What if this is as good as it gets?

I just heard the Van Morrison classic "days like this", and it reminded me of an inspirational film. Mervin Udall (Jack) can write romantic novels that would cause women to throw themselves at him but his own personal demons cause him to be obnoxious.

Upon falling in love with the delightful Helen Hunt, he seeks out his psychiatrist again because he wants to be a better man - I think Robbie Williams can't take credit for the thought but wrote a great song.

As Mervin leaves the psychiatrist he crushes the hopes of those waiting to see the doctor with the deflating "what if this is as good as it gets?"

A story of honour, the complexities of humans, the bizarreness of love. And the undercurrent message to be thankful for the little things. A sunny winter's day on the golf course with your kids. A friend who seems to never be far away. A family that will never give up on you. A tight group of work friends that seems to know honour.

Perhaps this is as good as it gets. And if so, it could be much worse. It's in the human nature to strive, but in the striving there's an obligation to smell the roses.

Special mention to Cuba Gooding Jr as Frank Sachs, the gay art dealer with balls of steel and a huge heart.
